1d. Who was it that died 40 years ago that changed things for disabled members of society?

1e. Noted this in the June 2008 Lion magazine by Albert F Brandel First International Vice

               President

Service is a Joy, Not a Chore

I meet many Lions with many years of service in my travels as an international officer. I also read
about longtime Lions in this magazine and see newspaper stories about respected community
members who serve their town as a loyal Lion. These Lions share something in common.
Sometimes they voice these specific words: they gain more from serving others than they give.

It is in giving that we receive. Longtime Lions know this. The privilege of service is indeed ours.
Helping other gives us a good feeling inside and changes us for the better. Service is not a chore.
It is not an obligation. It's something we look forward to, something that enriches our lives.
I bring this to your attention because it relates to membership. We won't continue to thrive as we
have for nearly a century unless we recruit new members of all ages. I believe that prospective
members often don't join precisely because they are busy people who don't want another
responsibility. They don't realize what service is all about. We need to communicate the positive

           side of service.
Working together with likeminded people to improve our community is a joy and pleasure. Our
best recruitment tool is ourselves: we need to show others that a life of service is a life worth

           living.
